Shikishi — Small Japanese Paintings and Calligraphy Panels

Shikishi are the most Japanese form of painting — miniature art panels that combine brushwork, poetry, and calligraphy in a compact square format. Originating in the Heian period (9th–12th centuries), shikishi reflect the aesthetics of minimalism and the philosophy of Zen. Our gallery presents a growing archive of these small Japanese paintings, including works that are part of the collection today as well as rare shikishi that once passed through our hands.

Riga Shunga Gallery
Shunga (春画) is a type of Japanese erotic art typically executed as a kind of ukiyo-e, often in woodblock print format. While rare, there are also extant erotic painted handscrolls which predate ukiyo-e. Translated literally, the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring; "spring" is a common euphemism for sex.

Exhibition: “One Hundred Pictures by Kyōsai”

The exhibition presents a rare collection of woodblock prints from One Hundred Pictures by Kyōsai (暁斎百図, Kyōsai Hyakuzu), one of the most remarkable series by Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889) — the legendary Japanese painter and printmaker known for his wit, grotesque imagination, and mastery of satire.
Created between 1863 and 1866, this series explores a vast range of subjects: from humorous demons and mythological parodies to vivid scenes of daily life, religious processions, and allegories of folly and wisdom. The exhibition reveals Kyōsai’s unparalleled ability to blend the sacred and the profane — a vision that shaped the spirit of modern Japanese art.
The Riga Gallery of Japanese Art presents over fifty original sheets from the first edition, making this one of the most extensive public displays of Kyōsai Hyakuzu outside Japan.
Venue: Eduards Pāvuls Museum, Latvia
Dates: October 25 – November 2025
Curator: Dmitry Yakovtsev

New Collection: Heisei-Era Oil Paintings
Contemporary Japanese Art at Riga Gallery
Riga Gallery presents a new collection from the Heisei period (1989–2019) — a time when Japanese artists blended traditional aesthetics with modern sensibility. These oil paintings on canvas capture the spirit of an era marked by quiet introspection, subtle emotion, and a dialogue between East and West.
The works reveal a delicate balance between classical brush traditions and contemporary expression, offering a glimpse into Japan’s evolving artistic language at the turn of the century.
