The exhibition presents a rare collection of woodblock prints from
One Hundred Pictures by Kyōsai (暁斎百図,
Kyōsai Hyakuzu), one of the most remarkable series by
Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889) — the legendary Japanese painter and printmaker known for his wit, grotesque imagination, and mastery of satire.
Created between 1863 and 1866, this series explores a vast range of subjects: from humorous demons and mythological parodies to vivid scenes of daily life, religious processions, and allegories of folly and wisdom. The exhibition reveals Kyōsai’s unparalleled ability to blend the sacred and the profane — a vision that shaped the spirit of modern Japanese art.
The Riga Gallery of Japanese Art presents over fifty original sheets from the first edition, making this one of the most extensive public displays of
Kyōsai Hyakuzu outside Japan.
